How it works

Ayurveda and immunity

Ayurveda is a complete medical system that was prevalent for thousands of years before modern medicine existed and still holds good. This system comprises the knowledge and clinical experiences and methods of medicine, surgery, psychology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, ENT, social and preventive medicine, toxicology, and forensic medicine. It elaborates anatomy and physiology of the body and explains clinical methods of diagnosis and etiology and disease pathogenesis. It advocates the way of living for a healthy existence through optimal seasonal regimen and daily regimen.

As per Ayurvedic principles, the key to achieving good immunity and good health, in general, is a properly functioning digestive system (Samyak Agni). This means that the body is not only able to digest food well but is also excellent in assimilation, absorption, transportation, and elimination processes involving the nutrients and toxins.

You must’ve heard the phrase, ’Your body is what you eat.’ Well, it holds true at the physical level. All tissues (Dhatus) in the body are ultimately the result of what is being ingested, digested, and assimilated in the body. Any anomalies arising in this pathway, either structurally, functionally, or both, lead to disease formation. All pathways in the human body are governed by certain bio-energies (doshas) that overlook and control the production and functioning. It follows the rule of vertical integration to satisfy the common goal/need for existence.

Highlights

Ayurveda emphasizes treating the human being and not just the human body.

HUMAN BEING 🡪 BODY + MIND + SOUL

So the concept of mind (Manas) is inevitable in understanding the existence of the human being. This explains why many conditions have idiopathic nature and might show no physical symptoms of illness, but it causes unwell or unease in people in general.

The concept of how the human body works are very complicated and involve understanding multiple factors that work coherently. Therefore, treating a person physically, mentally, emotionally, and taking into consideration their beliefs, spirituality, and way of living is the way to achieving wholesome results.

Immunity has been explained as the concept of ‘Vyadhikshamatva and Ojas’ in Ayurveda and refers to the resilience and resistance to adverse conditions, developed as a result of proper metabolism of nutrients and excretion of toxins. This means that a body that achieves good cellular metabolism and excretion ends up having a strong immune system. This involves various organ systems, including the cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, renal system, hepatic system, digestive system, endocrine system, central nervous system, and musculoskeletal system, in general.

Achieving such a state of equilibrium relies heavily on factors that we can control, which includes diet, routine, stress levels, good practices, exercise, and good thoughts. Certain factors not under our control include weather, genetic factors, congenital malformations or conditions, hereditary factors, and predispositions, also play a major role. Methods to counteract or subsidise or manage these non-controllable factors can help in achieving a certain level of equilibrium.
